Production and Procurement Engineer reporting to Managing Director Apply Now


Prime Objectives of the position:

  • Components procured using best practices
  • Production planned to optimise lead times, inventory levels and use of human resources
  • Technical information maintained and updated on components, finished products and working methods

Main Duties:

  • Purchasing of components using MRP techniques to balance inventory whilst minimising risk of stock outs and ensuring that total costs are minimised. Regular purchasing of many items can be delegated where there is no requirement for technical knowledge. There are a mixture of components including bought in mechanical and electrical parts as well as many machined or fabricated parts. Many parts are sold as spares, or used by the Customer Support Engineers and these must be regularly replenished.
  • ‘Owning’ the Production Plan and reviewing this regularly with both the Sales Director and the production team. This plan show all the machines on the build programme. Machines can be part built before a customer specification is available but full details must be to hand in good time. There is a small mechanical production team, currently with 3 members and 1 electrical assembly technician.
  • Maintaining full technical records on components and products. Technical drawings are produced by an external design house using 3D CAD (Solid Works) and these must be kept current and properly connected to the stock control system (Sage Line 50). New drawings must be checked and signed off and this will involve the Senior Mechanical Engineer.
  • Contribute to the design process so that manufacturing, assembly and lifetime servicing costs are all considered, total number of components and time for assembly are reduced – future machines must have enhanced capabilities, cost less and be easily maintained at full working efficiency.

Key Qualities, Skills and Attributes Required:

Essential

  • Team player with creative problem solving skills.
  • Full UK driving licence and own car
  • Excel skills and knowledge of MRP Stock Management.
  • GCSE Maths and English – Grade C or above

Desirable

  • Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Conversant with Sage Line 50
  • Several years’ experience in production and purchasing for an engineering company

The Company

Select Bag Sealers (SBS) is a small engineering business that manufactures and supports packaging machinery used in the food industry. The current owners acquired the business early in 2016 and have already made significant improvements to the working environment, efficiency and responsiveness of the organisation.

Part of a small privately owned group based near Leeds Bradford airport, the owners see the opportunity for considerable growth over the next few years both by offering excellent support to the UK customer base and by planned expansion into other geographical markets.

The Group employs around 35 people, sharing resources such as finance, HR and compliance. SBS has a small dedicated workforce focusing on machine assembly and customer support with on-site service and rapid spares availability. Since acquiring the business, the accounts and stock systems have been completely changed to streamline business processes. Whilst many further improvements are possible, the work so far has reaped huge benefits such as simplifying supply of spare parts, eliminating huge amounts of paperwork. The business is now far more responsive to its customers.

Working with a local engineering consultancy, we have converted the technical drawing base to 3D CAD (Solid Works) providing a strong foundation for product development.

The Opportunity

Over the last 18 months, production has been the direct responsibility of the Managing Director. Procurement has also been overseen by the MD, although much of the routine purchasing is now fairly automated and is carried out by someone else.

A huge amount of technical and organisational work is now in its final stages, making it the ideal time to recruit a new team member who will champion the production and procurement role. This is very much the ‘bridge’ between Sales and Manufacturing and will require someone able to obtain, interpret and act on information regarding actual sales orders, expected sales orders and sales forecasts.

This key role requires a real mix of skills – engineering skills to understand the products and how components can be made, analytical skills to work with Bills of Material, production schedules and capacity plans, and people skills to negotiate between departments and arrive at optimum results.
